Story greases the hoists and pulleys, it causes adrenaline to surge, shows us the way out, down, or up, and for our trouble, cuts for us fine wide doors in previously blank walls, openings that lead to the dreamland, that lead to love and learning, that lead us back to our own real lives..."
~ Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Ph.D.

The view from Main Street, Eastsound, Orcas Island

For a Look Around the Island: Chamber of Commerce

Lodging: Orcas Island has a full range of lodging options from camping, to guest houses, lodges, B & B's, and Inns. Click here for a listing of Orcas Island Lodging. Since the summer is peak season on the island and many establishments are already booked, please make your lodging reservations right away. We will be meeting at the library in the viilage of Eastsound so make your choice accordingly, and depending upon how far you want to travel each day. Click here for lodging options in the village of Eastsound. The island is busy in the summer with weddings and summer vacationers.

Camping: Moran State Park and West Beach Resort, Moran is shady with tall trees, West Beach has great sunset views and community sunset bonfires. Each is about a 15 minute drive from where we will be meeting in Eastsound. Make your reservations early, these both fill early in the prime summer season on Orcas Island.

Getting to Orcas: You can get to Orcas Island by boat, seapplane on Kenmore Air from Seattle, or Washington State Ferry.

Ferry Schedule: Schedule departing from Anacortes to Orcas Island

Please allow extra time for summer traffic, possible road construction delays, and heavy demand on the ferries with summer travelers. The San Juan Islands are a primo place to be in the summer and the ferry lines are usually long. In mid-day that can mean waiting in line several hours to catch the next ferry. The early and late ferries are usually easier to get onto.

Walk On: If you decide to stay in the village of Eastsound and won't need a car, you can leave your car at the ferry parking lot on the mainland and walk aboard the ferry. There is a shuttle that will take you the 20 minutes from the Orcas Island Ferry Terminal to the village of Eastsound . The library, where we will be meeting, is in the village, two block from the waterfront, one block to good restaurants, book stores, bakeries, parks, and art displays. You may enjoy the change of pace in walking around the village, seeing the sights, and meeting the people.

Island Ryhthm: Once you set foot on the island, you may find the easy-going islandryhthm makes travel to get to this special event and the magic of the stories all the more meaningful. After teaching Storytelling since 2000 on the Oregon Coast, on the rim at Crater Lake, in the heart of The Redwoods on the banks of the Smith River and in various conference rooms, I have found the power of the place addsimmensely to the experience. I have chosen Orcas Island in the scenic San Juan Islands accordingly.
