About Stories and Tellers:

"Storytellers are leaders, whether it be religious, political, corporate, or community."
~ Luke Thompson, University Professor

"The ancient art of storytelling... awakens and nourishes the timeless and archetypical experiences, symbols, and forces within us all."
~ "Storytelling and The Art of the Imagination" by Nancy Mellon

"To be a person is to have a story to tell."
~ Isak Dennison

"Humans are not ideally set up to understand logic. They are ideally set up to understand stories."
~ Roger C. Schank, Cognitive Scientist, author of
"Tell Me A Story: Narrative as Intelligence"

"A storyteller is one who creates an atmosphere where wisdom can reveal herself."
~ The Inuit People

"Stories set the inner life into motion, and this is particularly important where the inner life is frightened, wedged, or cornered. Story greases the hoists and pulleys, it causes adrenaline to surge, shows us the way out, down, or up, and for our trouble, cuts for us fine wide doors in previously blank walls, openings that lead to the dreamland, that lead to love and learning, that lead us back to our own real lives..."
~ Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Ph.D.

We will be meeting at the library in the viilage of Eastsound so make your choice accordingly, depending upon how far you want to travel each day. Click here for lodging options in the village of Eastsound. As of this writing, Turtleback Inn still has rooms: http://www.turtlebackinn.com If they are full, keep searching, like the heros in the stories.

Camping: There are six campsites reserved for us from Tuesday, July 24 - Saturday, July 28, checking out Sunday, July 29, at Moran State Park. The cost is $116.50 per campsite for 5 nights. If you would like to stay in one of these sites, please contact Lindagail at 425-896-8523 or Lindagail@NLPPacific.com If you want additional days in the park before or after Storytelling, reserve your place online at Washington State Parks Reservations The park is about a 15 minute drive from East Sound, where we will be meeting.

Getting There: You can travel to Orcas Island by boat, plane, or Washington State Ferry.

Ferry Schedule: Departing from Anacortes to Orcas Island The ferry will post the summer schedule after March 24. Traveling from Anacortes for Orcas will be traveling Westbound. Please allow extra time for summer traffic, possible road construction delays, and heavy demand on the ferries with summer travelers. The San Juan Islands are a primo place to be in the summer and the ferry lines are usually long. Sometimes it means swaiting in line to catch the next ferry.

Walk On: If you decide to stay in the village of Eastsound and won't need a car, you can leave your car at the ferry parking lot on the mainland and walk aboard the ferry. There is a shuttle that will take you the 20 minutes from the Orcas Island Ferry Terminal to the village of Eastsound . The library, where we will be meeting, is in the village, two block from the waterfront, one block to good restaurants, book stores, bakeries, parks, and art displays. You may enjoy the change of pace in walking around the village, seeing the sights, meeting the people.

Island Ryhthm: Once you set foot on the island, I think you will find the easy-going island ryhthm makes your pilgrimage to get to this special event and the magic of the stories all the more meaningful. I was there on February 26 and toured the island in preparation for this event. It was such a pleasure to be there, I think you'll enjoy it, too. After many years of teaching Storytelling for the past 12 years on the Oregon Coast, Crater Lake, The Redwoods, and various conference rooms, I have found the power of the place clearly adds to our experience.

What to bring with you:
•  2 printed copies of your story: be sure to read "Guidelines for Choosing a Story"
•  Layers of comfortable clothing to dress for changing temperatures
•  Rain coat (be prepared)
•  Comfortable walking shoes
•  Hat

If the weather is clear, we may make a field trip as part of the class from the library up Mount Constitution for the spectacular view - all the way to Mount Baker and British Columbia - or do some of our work at the stone circles on the island or in the forest down by Crescent lake in Moran State Park. If you walk onto the ferry, I will arrange a ride for you to these special places. Photo shows Mount Baker and the North Cascades from the top of Mount Constitution in Moran State Park.
